Nutrition and care

The British Shorthair cat is very easy to care for and does not make any special trouble to its owners. The "teddy" short coat is an easy-care coat, requiring no washing or combing out. Only during the moulting period (approximately once a year) the cats require their coats to be combed out. We recommend this procedure to be done by simply using a slightly wet hand, without using a comb.

One of the main conditions for the cat's health is proper nutrition. A well-balanced food is required. The quality and the quantity of food depends on the cat's age. The younger the kitten, the more often it should be fed (4-5 times per day). Kittens unlike the adult animals should be given small portions throughout the whole day. Adult cats eat 1-2 times a day. Cats are the true predators, and prefer high protein foods, i.e. meat (beef, mutton, poultry). Milk and dairy products (yoghurt, cottage cheese, cheese) are usually given to the kittens until they are 1 year old, as well as to pregnant and feeding females. The fresh water should be always kept available.

If you feed the cat with natural products, then during the active moulting period a "B" vitamin supplements should be added. We do not recommend to continuously add the vitamins to the cat's food.

Mixed foods are also allowed: 1/3 of a daily intake - meat, 1/3 - canned food, 1/3 - dry foods.

When selecting canned meat and dry foods, the preference should be given to professional class foods (with "premium" or "super premium" label). This becomes critical when you feed your cat only with manufactured food.

All kittens offered at the British Shorthair cattery "Vernissage" are given detailed instructions on nutrition and care.
